Residency in the Parque Natural Sierra María - Los Vélez, Andalucía, Spain @JOYA

In November 2022, I had a chance to immerse myself in two-week residency at JOYA: ARTE + ECOLOGÍA.

The area of the Natural Park of Sierra María Los Vélez had been affected by draught and soil erosion due to various factors, such as climate change and the practice of excessive cultivating.

The residency allowed an insight into a lifelong art+science project by Simon and Donna Beckmann, who took over the land and the derelict farm of Los Gázquez and turned it into a home and an artist spaces that are shared with other international artists throughout the year.

One of the aims of this residency for me was to research how my practice could be more sustainable. And I was hugely inspired by the ways everything is recycled at Los Gázquez. In particular water.

Another strain of research included reimagining the work that would encompass a form of living/being. The latter has been developed through an exercise of daily record of thoughts and feelings experienced during the immersive walks in the area. It is an ongoing work and is continued back home in the UK.

I am pleased to share some of the information about the processes and research from the time at JOYA: ARTE + ECOLOGÍA.
